Position Overview:

This position is responsible for the preparation, evaluation, and microscopic interpretation of cells to detect cancer and other abnormalities (e.g. benign tumors, infectious agents, inflammatory processes, etc.) under the direction of the pathologist.  Is responsible for the day to day operations of the cytology area.  Assists in data collection and analysis to support regulatory requirements, quality assurance, continuous systems improvement and special projects.  Maintains skills, knowledge, and proficiency in cytology specimen collection, preparation, and analysis.

 

Educational Requirements 

  1. Bachelor’s degree required with CT(ASCP) certification or equivalent education.
  2. 3 years of recent experience in Cytology and liquid-based paps preferred
  3. BLS Certification

Essential Skills and Experience

  1. Basic computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel. Has experience with Laboratory software for cytology functions.
  2. Manages time wisely and adjusts to workload volumes.
  3. Possesses good written and oral communication skills.
  4. Cross trains to assist/perform histology and pathology assistant duties.

 

Competencies:

Is proficient in general Cytology practice including liquid based preparation, evaluation, and interpretation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimen testing.  Proficient in FNA procedures.

Exercises critical thinking skills and knowledge in clinical decision-making.

Embeds continuous systems improvement and quality assurance into pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical components of daily work as related to laboratory testing.

Adheres to safety and government regulations and standards to laboratory practice.

Stays current with knowledge related to cytology and industry trends related to Cytology practices and shares recommendations for improvements.

Practices ethics of profession and abides by the Winona Health behavioral standards/values.

Job Responsibilities

Proficient in operating Cytopathology equipment. Responsible for equipment operation and maintenance, proper reagent use, methods for running equipment and proper functioning of the equipment.  Performs required preventative maintenance and troubleshoots problems with appropriate follow-up. 

Demonstrates proficiency in the processing, screening, evaluation, and reporting of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, including Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA).

Demonstrates working knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulations and actively participates in preparation for and annual accreditation process.

Workload recording; records the slide results of each case that is examined, the number of slides screened or rescreened within the last 24 hours, and the number of hours spent examining those slides as is required by regulatory requirements (CAP). 

Performs required quality control and proficiency testing and actively evaluates data and develops corrective actions and follow-up.

Assists with the evaluation and development of new or improved tests systems, as assigned. 

Maintains a safe work environment.

Complies with organizational/departmental policies, procedures, and requirements for mandatory education.

Assists in the selection and evaluation of new equipment and procedures. 

Performs other duties as requested or assigned.

Work Environment:

Must exercise proper precaution to avoid potential exposure to infectious agents, chemical vapors, skin contact with tissue and body fluids.  Must be free of physical disabilities precluding the operation of laboratory equipment.
