Job Description Summary:

The tech will be responsible for preparing slides of fluid body materials for cell study and staining and screening slides for pathologists. Skilled and proficient in the principles, concepts and techniques of the practice of general cytology. Such proficiency is acquired through completion of a cytotechnologist program in an ASCP accredited school or the equivalent. CT (ASCP) with B.A. or B.S. degree is required. Certification by the ASCP as a Cytotechnology Specialist. State license required by Tennessee as a Cytotechnologist. Supervision will be by the Cytology Manager/Supervisor. The tech will be responsible for the assigned shift as scheduled. Incumbents are subject to overtime and call back by the department as designated by the hospital.

The schedule for this position will be: 1st shift, Monday-Friday, Rotation shifts: 7:00am-3:30pm; 8:30am-5:00pm. Rotating weekends.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Stains and prepares slides of submitted specimens for cell study.

  • Screens slides microscopically for atypical characteristics and marks atypical slides for pathologists.

  • Records, enters into computer, and files results of cell studies under the direct supervision of the Pathologist/Cytology Manager/supervisor.

  • Obtains and processes cytologic specimens at bedside or in Radiology when immediate handling is indicated.

  • Monitors and orders supplies.

  • Contributes to the positive work climate and overall team effort of the department.

  • Maintains all workload for each 24 hour period, recording the total number of slides examined plus the number of hours screening slides in all laboratories along with required QA/QC documentation.

  • Advanced knowledge in cytomorphology as required of a specialist (SCT).

  • Pour-over and transport hazardous flammable waste (alcohols, xylene, and stains) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the lab dock as needed (RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification required).

  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

EDUCATION:

  • Must maintain extensive knowledge of cytology and be an authority.
